Yarn Dyeing for Beginners and Beyond

Have you ever admired the beautiful multi-colored yarns available at your local yarn shop? Express your creativity through hand-painting and dyeing two skeins of superwash yarn with fiber artist, Rita Petteys. Each student will have the opportunity to choose a multi-color combination that they love and pair it with a semi-solid color that coordinates or contrasts. The class will also cover topics such as choosing harmonious colors, measuring dye in both liquid and powder form, how to hand-paint yarn, how to dye yarn via immersion techniques, rinsing yarn, safety, compiling materials if you want to do dyeing at home, and other topics. At the end of the workshop, students will take with them two skeins of hand-dyed, hand-painted yarn, and class handouts. This class is perfect for people who have no previous experience with dyeing, or for those who love to dye and don’t have space to do it in. All skill levels are welcome. This class is messy, so please wear old clothes

Rita Petteys is the owner of Yarn Hollow, a hand-dyed fiber, yarn, and fabric company based in Grandville, Michigan. Yarn Hollow, operating since 2005, was born of a long love of fiber arts and color. Rita was a young knitter and crocheter who returned to knitting after college, starting with the mythic boyfriend sweater. Then came spinning, and dyeing followed. Yarn Hollow focuses on color in all manners: pastel, bright, dark, muddy, neutral, saturated. Using a lot of careful measurements and the best quality fibers, yarns, and fabrics, the business strives to produce goods that vibrate with life, color, and reflect the enthusiasm Rita has for the fiber arts.

Rita has also been teaching dyeing and other aspects of the fiber arts since 2007. She has taught a variety of classes focusing on dyeing and color mixing, and has taught at yarn shops, fiber retreats, and fiber festivals throughout the Midwest. She has also taught at Oxbow, the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts, and for the Michigan League of Handweavers annual conferences.

Northbound KAL, Session 1

We are thrilled to be working with Annie Haas of This.Bird.Knits.Designs. Starting Saturday, July 16, we will be knitting Northbound as a KAL. If you have never participated in a KAL, it is a group that works on the same project together. No one is an instructor, everyone helps each other. Thistledown Shoppe will host this KAL and maybe even find some goodies to go with it. No instructor means no charge for the KAL, but we do request that you purchase your pattern and yarn from us.  You will receive 10% off.

Five Sessions - Saturdays July 16 and 30, August 13 and 27, and September 10. 10:30 am - noon.

Meet and Greet Annie, the designer. Friday, July 22 6 pm - 8 pm. Annie grew up in and still lives in East Lansing. If you go to Ravelry, you can see her patterns here. We have several of her garments on display at the shoppe: Nell, Zooey, Cabin Shawl,  Kuni, Around Cowl, Mallory Knits, and our KAL, Northbound.

Materials needed:
Tapestry needle
Stitch marker
Waste yarn
Needles
US size 6 (4.0 mm)
US size 8 (5.0mm)

Techniques used:  short rows, Kitchener stitch, knitting in the round, blocking, using a chart.

Reminder: this is not a class.  If you need help, we can suggest tutorials, but the purpose of a KAL is have a group knitting a particular project together.

Knit a gauge prior to our first meeting.  Annie suggests the following:
 "Gauge
17.5 stitches (cast on 20 sts) & 21 rows = 4" x 4" stockinette stitch with
larger needles, after blocking. This is approximately 4.4 sts/inch.
*If your gauge isn't exactly 4.4 sts/ inch:
To find the correct size for your gauge, determine how many sts per inch
you are knitting ( ideally between 4.25 and 4.5)"

Christine's Baby Booties, Session 1

Knit a sweet baby bootie with fingering weight yarn. Free pattern available here.

Wednesdays, July 13 and 20, 20161:30 pm - 3:30 pm
Instructor:  Kathy
Cost:  $20.
Materials needed:  fingering weight yarn, 5 double pointed needles US 1 or 1.5
Skills needed:  Must know how to cast on, knit, purl, cast off.
Techniques taught:  knitting with double point needles, picking up stitches, yarn over, knit two together, i-cord.

From Fuzzy Galore: “This pattern was published in Threads no 22 (April 89) in a letter to the editor from Christine Bourquin. She was at the time 95 and living in Redwood City CA, still knitting, and expressed the desire to have her pattern live on. As Christine would be 108 today, we can only hope that she’s still around, but perhaps she’s not able to see well enough to still make them. …Christine’s legacy is this pattern for booties that stay on because of the clever side ribbing, and as we all know keeping booties on babies is not a straightforward task…”

Go here to see what others have done with this pattern.
